distributer issue
i was told that the rod that goes into the distributer and the oil pump was to be installed in the oil pump first. i went to prime up the oil pump and couldn't get the rod to set down in the pump.if this is true, is there any way to install it through the top instead of havin to pull the engine out and droppin the oil pan.i hope there is because thats all i got left to do to fire it up for the first time in 2 years.

First, take the lock ring off the rod with a set of pliers. Then install the rod in the distributor end first with some loc-tite. This will hold the rod in place on the dist as you drop in the dist and mate the rod to your oil pump. It works great for your situation. Did it last week and everything is doing fine.
