Gas Smell Since I Filled Up Last, This Is New

Help, I seem to have a bad raw fuel smell, this only happend for the first time and it is bad, if i drive it it goes away but when it is sitting it is bad, i just noticed this, what could it be? I mean i always smell a little fuel smell when the car is running but that is just exhaust i figure, how can u tell if ur car is running to rich? On the interstate i got great fuel mileage and it didn't stink, other than the fuel smell when i was sitting still, so I have raw fuel smell in the cabin while it sits, and a fuel smell when running, it smells like a carb and it is fuel injected, help.....

look on top of your tank and see if there is gas there, mine leaked when i would fill it b/c the sending unit needed a new rubber gasket

You will need to pull the tank, but check the vent for the charcoal canister which comes off the top of the tank also, maybe the tube has come off or been cut.

i noticed that the charcoal canister isn't hooked up
and there is one hose that isn't hooked up, i don't have any smog stuff, so u think i should cap off the canister or what?? Besides that the smell is comming from the rear i think

also noticed that the fill in around the fuel filler neck at the door is ripped could this be? I mean the filler neck has not been messed with so i am guessing this is not a problem

If your positive the smell eminates from the rear of the car than I would suspect that one of the seals to the tank is shot.
Filler neck seal
pump seal
sending unit seal
Jack up the rear and get under there and look around your bound to track it down. good luck

Almost forgot check around the fuel filter also.

i think the fuel filter is the culprit, i haven't changed it.. and that would maybe mean the sudden smell ya know

Is there a nice little tutorial on how to replace the fuel filter? I hear u got to have this special tool, but what I want to know is how do u use them??? I want to replace it, I feel it may need it, then i will pull the tank later and replace the fuel sending unit and put a new seal on it, the gas hand doesn't show correct lol.. Thanks

you need to trip the inertia switch run the car til it runs out of gas in the lines then locate the filter pull out the white plastic clips and pull the hoses of carefully. one line is dry and the other one will have gas in it(when i changed mine gas hit me in the face) so turn your head. the new filter will come with clips so dont worry about the old ones

the Haynes Book gives a pretty good "How to" also, but it is just about exactly how terribleonexx88 said. I would also take your gas cap off to relieve pressure. Man i did this about a month ago. make sure you put your fuel line back on properly too.....mine came off while driving...that really sucked

yes terrible, i have read the book and found this out before seeing your post, but i do appreciate that info alot pal, thanks i will get me another filter, hell the filter i have now looks just like the one in the haynes book, so I am going to get another one lol, can a clogged filter cause a change in fuel consumption? Just a thought, actually I think i am getting pretty good MPG..

Did you ever look on the ground after you parked it to see if there is any gas leaking? Could be leaking from a seal or someplace, you never know. Has this happend again or was that the only time that it occured?

this is the only time this has occured when i completly filled up the car, I will pull the gas tank some time, in the mean time i will just not fill it all the way up, also there is no leaks that i can tell, I have traced all the lines to the front and all is ok, but that doesn't mean that the tank isn't leaking from the top where the fuel sender goes into..

I have the same problem and after looking for several time some hard cornering lead me to fin the filler seal at the tank had leaking.
New part #F4ZZ-9072-DA on order and will solve the problem.

the most probable cause is as said above, the filler neck grommet. It usually leaves a nice little stain around it so you can see if it's leaking
