suggestions.

hey i'm a new driver new to cars. i recently bought a 1988 gt ford mustang 5 liters. its been sitting in my garage and i have to idea what to do with it. i bought it online thinking that it only had 60 thousand miles, while cleaning it up i saw a recite for an oil fillup and it said that it had 160 thousand miles. so i think its near 200 thousand miles. now its got medium defects(scrapes/paint missing) also the inside is very oldish the seats bad and carpet is ripped other stuff like that. now had it really been 60 thousand miles i would have fixed it in a hearbeat. and i'm not going to sell it telling the buyer it only has 60 thousand miles. so do i go and put maybe 3000 dollars into overall fixes and have the car last maybe another half year, or do i scrap it. quick and reasonable response. (and no i'm not rich) i will try to get some pictures online soon.

well does it run alright now? is there alot of rust? is the interior and paint missing the only issues with it? if it runs fine then go ahead and drive/keep it, if it's spewing oil in every direction and leaking gas and rusting threw the floor boards and fenders then scrap it... we wont be able to give you a full answer until we get some pics, lots of pics

$3,000 get you a long way in restoring AND upgrading a 5.0

If it runs good and isnt blowing smoke, ..... drive it.
engines can take 200k mile no prob.

Start cleaning up the interior and replacing worn out
bushings and brakes and such.

Tons of info on the web. Hell worst case scenario you can
put a brand new rebuilt stock engine in it for like $1,800

I would start fixing it. If the body is solid without major cancer, the rest can be done a little at a time and you'll have a nice car. The red and white one in my sig has 160,000 and I have a GT that looks just like it with 182,000.

alright thanks alot guys these are great tips. i will have the pictures as soon as possible but i'm on a business trip out of the states. yeah my mustang looks just like your red one but white and without the stripes. i dont remeber any rust but i did have to buy a new radiotor for the car. and if i do decide to try and fix up this car, what should i do to it? go normal stock or try to put fancy bumbers and make it like fast and furios car?(like i said i'm very new to cars)

this is the last thing anyone should ever do to a mustang. IMO. and probably most other people on the site too. just get it back into shape and mechanically sound. then, start adding performance mods, if you're going to do anything. don't put bumpers and a wing and neon on it. that's blasphemy.

I agree to a point the ricer look is not for mustangs. But it is your car you can do what you think looks good, this forum is afterall called "modded mustangs"

Have fun with it.

^ agree.

have fun with the car. but since you're new to mustangs. take a look around at some that have exterior mods that are a little more low key. they are already sexy ass cars. and doing something extreme to the looks of them just takes away from their "natural beauty." (that's what i meant to say the first time.)

You would be surprised at how long the 302 lasts. They are strong engines! Mine has almost 160K on it and there is no smoke or nothin. Clean as can be...

ya dude your fine, dont even worry about miles right now, mine has 150k and it serously runs amazing.

totally forget about the mileage, that doesnt matter, just get it running good and get it mechanically good, then worry about cosmedic stuff
