What do you guys think about sea foam?

I was running with platinums and bad ignition wires for a while, getting horrible gas mileage like 11 to 12 miles per gallon in the city, until today when I installed motorcraft copper plugs and Taylor 8.2mm Thunder Volt wires. Runs a lot better now, but now I'm thinking about using sea foam to clean my valves for my 5.0. Is it a good idea?

Sea foam isn't bad. I sold lotsa that stuff when I worked @ the auto parts store. Many a "old timer" swore by it.

I myself like Barryman B-12, but thats just me. Basically, both do/can do the same thing. Sea foam leaves a slight oily film in its wake whereas the B-12 does not. Other than that, both will clean a crankcase, valves and injectors etc;.

And, the B-12 is cheaper.

I ran the B-12 in my '03 Eclipse. Used it every other fill-up and every 3rd oil change.
I was getting 37MPG HWY w/ synthetic oil (Valvoline).
EPA rated that car for 31MPG HWY

I have a bucket of dirty intake and exhaust valves, Ive tried to clean one with seafoam, and it will not clean off, I soaked it in seafoam overnite and it did nothing. I tried, STP inj. cleaner, pb blaster, wd 40, gasoline, motoroil, alcohol, and brake parts cleaner. brake parts cleaner worked the best, but did little.

I used it on my original engine for years.

When I tore down my 17 yr old engine with 100,000 miles on it
that had never seen the light of day and only 5-6,000mile oil changes (at best) .........

it had zero sludge or gunk in oil pan or under the valve covers
The top of pistons had very little carbon build up and very little
build up on the top of the valves.

Will it make your engine parts look like new? no

Will it keep your engine clean and sludge free? YES

The best way to keep your lifter vally, underintake, and oil pan clean is to use a higher temp thermostat (190-195). PCV plays a huge roll in intake gunk.

^^^^ same with my motor that I never put any seafoam in....or anything for that matter other than 87 octane.

Personally, I would never put seafoam in my car. I would rather the deposits stay on the valves than foul a plug, wash the cylinders down, cause the seat to get fire slotted from junk holding the seat open when it breaks loose, ruin the O2 sensors and cats, etc... I say let sleeping dogs lay. It is a gimmic and not even one that works like rain-x

air/oil separator on the PCV line makes a world of difference.

I'm using 180 thermostat and 87 octane, because I have stock 10 degree timing. I was using 93 octane until I heard that it's robbing power, due to the fact that my stock timing performs best with 87 octane. Where you pour the oil into and has a breather, look into it and it looks clean as s**t. Overall, my engine still looks new. It's a 93' and has 89,000 original miles. Not bad. Thanks for the info guys!

How do you clean your engine with it? Do you let the vacume tube suck it up?

and when he says suck up the rest through a vacuum line, he means not for you to suck it up through a vacuum line, let the motor handle that haha

Keep in mind that the Ford valve covers (and others) have a baffle under the fill tube/breather hole, your looking at a metal shield in there, not the top of the heads

Drain your oil, buy some brake parts cleaner, bend the straw so that it is at a right angle, spray away, after it evaporates, put plug(s) in, and fill.

again, let sleeping dogs lie.

breaking up sludge in a high mile motor usually = bye bye motor.

That shit breaks loose and then plugs oil galleys and lifters and the next thing you know it is time for a rebuild.
