Pulled engine last night...LINK TO PICS

Last night I pulled the engine and transmission out of my '91 LX. It went pretty smoothly overall. I couldn't believe how rusted out the transmission crossbrace was! Anyway, here is some more info and pics...no use posting it twice:

I plan on cleaning the engine bay while I save for the engine and trans combo I want. I want to put in a C4 transmission and a 331 stroker with either a supercharger or a turbo. That is the wish list anyway.
I am going to take the engine down to the block and have a look to see if it is good enough to make a stroker out of it. If not I will have to get another one. The block had 163k miles on it before I removed it.

Ideally I would like around 450-500 hp at the rear wheels. I don't think that should be a problem with a 331 and boost from either a supercharger or turbo. The C4 can handle that power fine. As far as the rear end goes I am planning on just upgrading the 8.8.

With those power goals I would NEVER think of using a stock block! Way too much time $ and sweet to hava a major failure that you could have prevented.

especially when you can make the same power on a 200k mile stock motor.

I am not going to lie, I this is my first time doing anything like this...I am on a tight budget but I want to do this project correctly. What kind of suggestions would you all have for me? Should I shop around and find and buy the block and components I want and then have an engine builder put it all together? Should I just buy a crate engine and drop that in?

Crate engines are the easyest but they will not be built for your application. check out:

send Brian an email and discribe what you want and he will steer you in the right direction. I bought all my engine parts from him. Great service and knows his stuff.

for 400hp throw in a stock motor, refreshed maybe bored over to a 306, and some forced induction and you'll be fine.

... when you build the 302W's for over 500hp they go with a aftermaket block like dart or world products, so even if you build for 400hp and plan on upping the juice later might want to get that aftermarket block.

500-600 (at the crank) is doable with a stock block. There are many people that have hundreds of passes at that level without problems. The biggest factor is running lean and revving too high (6000+). I would go with a stand alone computer instead of "chipping" the stock computer. Western Digital has a cool one for about $1000 that plugs into the factory harness and is speed density, so you can save money on mass air sensors and all of recalibrating for injectors etc. There are others too but you will need a laptop. You will need a good transmission with billet/SFI flywheel and scattershield (unless you don't like your legs). Rear end will need to be upgraded too. A cage and sub frame connectors (if you don't already have them) and reinforce/weld boxes. There is a lot in the body of a Fox when trying to get power to the ground and not the twisting of the body.
