When To Upgrade Fuel Pump?

I had to drop my fuel tank to investigate a leak recently and I'll probably wind up buying a new tank thanks to the rust around the pump and float holes. While I have the tank sitting in my garage, I was wondering about replacing the fuel pump. Does it help at all?

The fuel system is stock and the engine has all the normal bolt ons + E303. I have 70mm MAF, 65mm TB and EGR and milled GT40Ps ready to go on for my next round of wrench turning. May get a Trickflow intake as well. No plans for forced induction.

I doubt that a fuel pump will give me more power over a stock fuel system, but I have read reports of the EFI 302's getting low fuel pressure or running lean when you push them hard. Is this really a probably with stock fuel systems? Would an upgraded fuel pump solve the problem? Or would an upgraded fuel pump + adjustable fuel pressure regulator solve the problem?

i'm not much of a pushrod guy but while you are in there why not throw one in anyway. it'll set you up for future gains without wondering if you are going to run lean.
i have an avaitor fuel pump/39 pound injectors and i never run lean

If you are going to have the tank out and you plan on future upgrades, throw a 255lph pump in right away.

4 sure like Darrel said put a 255lph in right away and like you said a regulator and a gauge would be a wise addition

Which one would be ideal 155, 190, or 255? I plan on staying n/a, add a few bolt-ons and throw in the TF topend kit in the future. I just figure I go ahead and upgrade the pump. I have a e-cam and car don't feel right.

Go with the 255lph. It will leave room to grow in the future. It will not hurt your mileage or be less reliable than the smaller pumps so you might as well get the big one. I've used a few BBK 255lph pumps with good luck. Someone once told me that Walbro makes most of those pumps that are on the market.

yeah a 255 is the way to go. and L8tr on if you want to highly mod the or add nitrous all you have to do is install a inline booster pump to make up for it. remember more fuel is better than not enough fuel to a certain extent. the few extra dollars it costs for a 255 is very minimal..spend the money scrooge....

Is there a preferable brand for the fuel pump? (holley, bbk, edelbrock etc...)

It is fairly easy if the tank is empty or close to empty.

It should be fairly easy. Since I've wrestled with it recently, here's what you need:

Socket set - just something normal, nothing funky here
Jack
A piece of wood to support tank with
Fuel line disconnect tool
Brass hammer or rubber mallet

If the tank is not empty, you can also buy a siphon pump. They come in several different varieties, but you can probably find a cheap one that looks like the pump from a blood pressure cuff with a rubber hose on each end. I bought something at a Home Depot which sucked because it wasn't a "siphon," it was a pump with a valve that prevented the free flow (ie, siphon) when you weren't pumping.

Just remember to relieve the fuel system pressure before doing anything. Somehow, while I was at school for a week (having depressurized the system weeks before that) I came back and disconnected the new tank and got a cloud of 93 octane straight to the face. Still haven't figured that out, because when I took the original tank out, there was no discharge. Must have been the OPEC Faeries.

Yeah, I know it's there for a reason. I disconnected it, ran the engine til it died, dropped the tank then put the new tank in a few weeks later. But somehow, when I dropped the new tank (which was never had gas put in it) I got a cloud of gasoline to the face.

So someone (Bigfoot?) decided to prime my fuel lines with a turkey baster or something after I emptied them and removed the old fuel tank, but before I put the new tank in. It's a mystery.

Is there a way to know if I already have an aftermarket fuel pump without removing the tank? I can hear my pump constantly when the car is on.

How elso would the fuel get to the motor if the pump was not on when the car is running? And no you cannot tell if the pump is bigger by listening to it they all pretty much sound like a electric motor unless you have an additional inline pump like I do then it is quite a bit louder when I turn the key on but after my car starts i cant hear shit! lol

Like everyone has said a 255lph is the only way to go because you can adjust the pressure with your fuel pressure regulator so if you ever decide to go with supercharger or turbo you can just bump up your pressure a little without having to change your pump because you are running lean. Lean is really bad. After you get these get your car dyno tuned and it will make it perfect you can gain some horsepower out of it too I was running lean and I got 30rwhp just by adjusting the pressure lol. I am going 255lph as we speak. So I will see how much more I will get out of it. http://www.diablosport.com/index.php...display&pid=32 this will give you a place around you that dyno tunes your mustang if you dont know where one's @.
