Electrical Problems?

I have an 88 lx and it starts and idles great, but when you drive it, it runs good through first. Then when i shift into second it starts cutting out and the temp. and volt guage start jumping all over the place. The car sat for a few years and we just dropped a different motor into it. I thought it might be a fuel problem because it sat for so long, but don't understand the guages. If anyone had any ideas i'd love to hear them. Thanks

mine did the same thing the car would try to die and the volt gauge went up and down like crazy. make sure the battery is grounded to the body and the motor.
