Installing 4.10's.
One of my best friends was a mechanic with Goodyear for about 6 years and moved to a locally owned shop about a year ago. He has never installed rear end gears. I am considering purchasing the item below and with his help doing it ourselves.
Is this something that a good mechanic can figure out or should I pay to have a shop who has done it before do the work? I would like to do most of the work myself so I can not only enjoy this car, but learn about it as well. It's something you should take to someone who knows gears like the back of their hand.

I've never done them myself, but after I paid someone to do mine and watched him put them in I feel confident I can put my own in. I read up on how to install them before I went to the guy and he did not measure anything. They have been in the car for 5 years and are still working. I'm not telling you to not check your clearances but if you feel confident in you friends ability and you follow the directions you should be able to do them. You are going to need some special tools to do it though. I was also a mechanic for 5 years myself.

Depending on the mileage of you car it's a good idea to change the bearings in your rear. You are going to buy a new pinion bearing anyways because you need the shim behind the old bearing (for the right pinion depth) and when you press it off the bearing gets damaged anyways. Just make sure you put the differential caps & shims back on the same way you took them off. And check the backlash and pattern, look online do some reading before you start the job.
