street tires? launch at 1500-2000 rpms and shift quickly

sticky tires? launch at 2500-4500 rpms and shift quickly

If you blow anything up, pull to the side, don't oil down the track...

Good luck.

drop the hammer and floor it at the same time. If it bogs, next time add 500 rpms to your launch rpm. If it spins, subtract 500 rpms. Don't get excited to cut a good reaction time, take your time. Find the optimum launch rpm where it doesn't bog and doesn't spin. Some cars are more sensitive the the rpm they like to launch at and it takes awhile to find the sweet spot.

When you pull up to the staging lanes if your on streets tires drive AROUND the burnout box and spin the tires a few times when you get around it to knock the dirt off. If you run treaded tires through the burnout box water will get up in the tread valleys and your tires will carry this down the track as you go making it more slick and making you look like a jackass for ruining the traction in that lane. When you stage you will ease up to the line till the little yellow light at the top lights. once you are pre staged inch forward until the second light illuminates and as soon as the second comes on get ready to go because there will not be a great amount of time. If you are running a manual tranny I always dump the clutch and go on the last yellow coming down the tree. This will give you a very good RT(Reaction Time) As for RPMs, I have to leave at 1900 on street tires if I dump the clutch. Most usually I pedal the clutch a bit to keep the rpm's up and the bogging down so I can launch a little closer to 2500 RPM's Just make sure you give your car a real good once over before you get to the strip and HAVE FUN!

make sure your car will pass inspection also.

They check your car before you can race. It must pass inspection.

I always do burnouts with all tires. Especially street tires. Just only burnout untill they just start to smoke and then stage.

A lot of people perpetuate the untrue rumor that burnouts on street tires are bad. But everyone I know that cuts 1.7-1.8 60 foots on true street rubber does a burnout, myself included. And yes, I use the water box and no there is no water left on the tires after doing a proper burnout.

Just make sure you pull all the way out of the water box during your burnout and then do at least a 3 second burnout after you are all the way out of the water to clear the water off the tires.

I usually use first gear and hold it at 6,000 rpms for a good 3-5 seconds.

I never said burnouts on street tires were bad, just unnecessary. Most people who run street tires at the track are not running 400 to 500 HP track demons that require heat in the tires for the added traction for a 5000 rpm launch. They are there in there mildly modded musclecar to make a few passes and see what their car can do. There is also a very broad spectrum covering "street" tires. DOT drags are "street" tires and will handle a burnout just fine but the BFG traction TA's that come on the mustangs nowadays are useless in the burnout box. It all depends on who and what they are driving. It seems to me, the young man asking the question is just there to make a few passes and have some fun, not run open brackets for prize money.

You can cut a 1.8-1.9 60 foot in a bone stock mustang with 225 all season tires...with all 225 hp...but not without warming the tires.

BTW launching a bone stock mustang at 5000 rpms and sticky tires is how you get the best times out of them.

what about the tire pressure does it help if you let some air out?
