what gears do i have

alright i have been researching for a while and just really cant figure it out.
i have a 1990 GT 5-speed
im pretty sure it was converted to a 5speed before i bought it, so i dont remember if auto's had different gears or not.
but my speedometer is way off, usually about 15mph or so....

so im trying to figure out what speedometer gear i should buy, i also have 18" saleens that im sure through it off a little, but doubt 15mph, i did a calculator and said that it would only through it off by like 2mph
im planning to eventually do 3:55s but for now i would at least like to have the right mph readings

Easy way to check. Jack the rear of the car up, put the transmission into neutral. Mark the tire, and mark the driveshaft. Rotate the tire, and count how many times the driveshaft completes a rotation, for every ONE rotation of the wheels. This will give you the closest guess as to which gear ratio you have.

2.73 and a 3.08 was optional. Some years had a 3.27 in the auto

Look at the "AX" code on your drivers door ID sticker.
M= 2.73
Z= 3.08
E= 3.27

its my dd so 4:10s might be a little much. its betw 3:55s and 3:73s

with the 4.10 in 5th gear you will be going about 55 at 2k. i dont know about you but unless i am on the freeway i am only going 55 on any side street. it helps prevent a speeding ticket cause ur less likely to cruse at a high speed

if its between 3.55 and 3.73 do the 3.73 they will barely hurt you on the highway

if you have 3.08s then your car is originally a 5speed not an auto

im a dummy, i went off the top of my head, cause i checked the 'ax' code a few weeks ago and i guess i thought i had a Z, its a E-so i then have 3.27s.

yeah then it was an AOD and definetly get the 3.73s cause there is not much a difference in 3.27s to 3.55s
