AFR Heads
For a car that is not a dd would you put the 225 heads on it? It still has the stock bottom end. But will be going to a 408 some time in the future. Sorry this is on my 90 5.0.

I wouldn't put them on stock 5.0. But if you get them for the 408 they should be fine. I had a buddy that was runnin a 408 with a 205 afr head and first pass off the trailer on motor he ran 10.90.

205s will work with a otherwise stock motor (you'll obviously be wanting an intake). You may need to clearance the pistons, not sure with the stock cam, but the valves will be bigger than the reliefs.

People said the same thing about using 265cc 4V cleveland heads on a 351w. But, in actuality it gives up nothing down low.

thats different.
You will loose a lot of intake runner velocity with those 205's on a 302 with a small cam. You may make good power up top, but your avg. hp over the entire power band will not be as good. You can run big heads on 302, but it requires the right cam and power band.

It doesn't matter what head you run as long as the rest of the pieces of the total combination match the heads. However, by the sounds of this scenario he is wanting to put 225 heads with 2.08 intake valves on a stock engine which I wouldn't do. For one the valve pockets will need to be cut for the bigger valves and for two the car will be an absolute turd. Not to mention all of the money involved in making the swap (gaskets, rockers, pushrods, head bolts, etc.). Waste of time and money on a 5 liter.

Big runners do not hurt low power numbers and 225cc runners are definitely not big. You just need the rpm to use them. The gains on the top end almost always outweigh the losses on the bottom end. You just need to be careful choosing a cam shaft that meets your needs. Running a large cam will hurt low end power way more than running a big cc head. And AFR has done its research, the 225 cc ports are not lazy ports even on a 302, but to use them to maximum potential you'll need to see the high side of 7500 rpms.

Seems that he wants to buy heads and use them on his stock engine until he can up grade to "the" engine (408). Obviously clearances have to be considered with regard to valves and pistons. The engine will function with the 225s it's just not going to be the optimum combination. Depending on what the actual time frame will be for the new engine, hunting up a decent set of used heads that will match the current engine might be a little wiser. Barring any kind of damage to the "used" heads, recouping his investment from the heads would be fairly easy. The best laid plans of mice and men always seem to miss the mark.

i think your best bet is finding a set of used gt-40 (gt-40p) heads until the time that you upgrade the engine, because you can usually sell the used parts for what you paid for them in the first place, then just take that money and put it toward your new aluminum wonders

Right now I am running 351w heads that have been ported and polished along with a valve job. But I was told these are doing nothing for me.

ported DO heads are probably as good as GT-40 heads.
