Removal of Timing cover

Since the oil pan seal sticks into the bottow of the timing chain cover, what's the best way to remove the cover without damaging the seal?

Loosen the oil pan and pop it down 1/2 or so?

That will work but it will be a bear to get back on. I don't put the locator dowels in my blocks. I razor blade the oil pan gasket at the block and then when I put the timing cover back on, I put the front part of the oil pan gasket on the timing cover, a small dab of RTV where the cover meets the oil pan (where the gasket is cut) and then line the cover up and torque the cover bolts. Doing it this way you don't have to drop the oil pan and run the risk of it leaking
