Nothing wrong with the plain old double chain IMHO. I would think gears would cause a lot of vibration on the valve train but my opinion is not based on actual experience, only looking at the concept. A couple of my chebby friends had gears for some reason.

The higher the speed the less efficient a chain is, a gear driven cam is in fact more accurate. Formula one cars use gear drives, instead of belts or chains. 19.5k rpms.

Get a true roller chain. Don't mess with gear drives. They transfer alot of harmonics to the valve train via the crank and don't have as accurate timing as some think. Anyone that has installed a dual idler gear drive knows how much slop is in them.

+1 I have seen way too many cheap gear drives go south. Most of the time machining is required to the timing cover which adds to the cost. A good quality indexable double roller timing set will be cheaper and you won't have to worry if that cool noise your gears are making is actually the gears eating each other getting ready to serve up your engine for desert.
