I would think gears would cause a lot of vibration on the valve train but my opinion is not based on actual experience, only looking at the concept. They transfer alot of harmonics to the valve train via the crank and don't have as accurate timing as some think. +1 I have seen way too many cheap gear drives go south. Most of the time machining is required to the timing cover which adds to the cost. A good quality indexable double roller timing set will be cheaper and you won't have to worry if that cool noise your gears are making is actually the gears eating each other getting ready to serve up your engine for desert.
