Bubbling Antifreeze
Well, while i was driving today and my oil light came on. nothing i could do, didnt have any money so i just kept drving (Only about 10 miles). I decided to check my antifreeze level and when i popped the cap off, it was bubbled and looked like carbanation out of a coke can. I did some reading and it could be from air or overheating. Was my case one of overheating since my oil is low and more friction was present? And is this a really bad thing or should i just change my oil and it be fine? Thanks

check the compression in all the cylinders and then see it bubbles are in the the coolant , pray its not your head gasket

Do a pressure test on the cooling system and go from there. Also, you could try pressurizing the cylinders and watching for air in the cooling system. May be a bad head gasket.

boy that really blows, sorry i'm dumb but how do you perform a pressure test or compression?

you need to buy or borrow this guage that hooks up to an air compressor and goes into the spark plug hole

Super Uncle
Able to diagnoise engine problems in a single bound, able to detect oil in the antifreeze with his X-ray Vision. I hope he will be happy at the Justice league with all of the other super Friends

Pressure test on cooling system
I am all about easy. If I understand correctly you remove your radiator cap, when cool, of course, and replace it with a cap that has a pump and a gauge. It looks like a penis enlarger pump, not that I have ever seen one... You pressurize your system, and then I guess you see if the pressure goes down, which would indicate a leak. I have never done it, but have seen the tools. You may be able to borrow one from autozone, or perhaps SUPER UNCLE has access to one. Let us know what happens, and for goodness sake man, get you a $1.00 quart of oil from Walmart and keep it in the trunk.. P.S. Is there any white crap in your oil. Look on the oil filler cap, on the stick look for bubbles.......................

yeah, its just weird because the oil was changed about 1200 miles ago, the oil pressure has been fine, and i drove a total of 15 miles with the light on. Its weird that the light or pressure never changed and when i check the oil it is very low,and the coolant has bubbles in it. I will diagnose further later today. I'm in college and rarely drive the car, except for weekends. Yeah my dad and grandpaw are a little better with cars (ALOT) and i'm sure we will run all the tests.

Okay, i put oil in it, put antifreeze in it, drove the car for thirty mins, stopped and checked the antifreeze, and no bubbles. drove fine throughout the drive, could my problem have been that my oil was low, causing more friction and thus more heat?

It could hav just been boiling...
Dont let your oil get low like that... Alot of time when it is bubbling you could have a bad hose or something...Any hole in the cooling system will do it...Do a pressure test just to make sure... But it sounds like it is fixed now...Keep an eye on the oil... |

yeah will do, i bought i few extra quarts just in case and keep them in my car. I was just wondering how it lost oil that fast. 1200 miles, thats crazy........Well i doubt this could have been my problem, but i'm ignorant about engines so here it goes.....I cleaned my MAF and cleaned my IAC. Then i started my motor, and then i let it cool. That is when i got a brilliant idea to check my coolant level, and thats when i saw whatever it was. boiling/bubbling. Could cleaning that stuff have effected the coolant anyway? Just putting it out there because i dont know why it would do it that one time and not again. But looks like its fine now.
My temp gauge doesnt go up to where its supposed to be on a normal temp either, it goes about an eigth up the meter. Could this be a bad thermostat? I bought a new 180* thermostat anyway because it was cheap and i heard they were pretty good. if that doesnt fix the gauge, what will? thanks

The gauges on the dash are dummy gauges...They really are not accurate at all...
Have you checkd for leaks around the valve cover? That is the most common place for oil to leak...Does the car have smoke that comes out of the tailpipes ever? If you really want to knw th temp buy a cheap gauge at autozone or something and install it... You should really try and find out where the oil is going...That would be my first plan of action... Also the car needs to be cold before you check the coolant... |

no smoke really, sometimes when revving, and when its cold outside, but every car has that. Yeah i will look around the valve cover and other places for oil.
About the gauge, it used to work fine, but now never moves. I was just wondering about maybe the temp sensor or thermostat was fu**ed or not. But i will invest in a more accurate gauge. Thanks for the help man, its late here and early there, its weird. Have you been home any? I bet the first week or two is pretty bad, or at least it would be for me. take it easy.

Nah I dont go home until I am done here...
ABout 69 or so more days...HOPEFULLY... The first week or two go by the fastest...Its the last couple months that drag on.. Check your temp sensor if it just went out like that... Find out where that oil is going... |

well, looks like i am done for a couple weeks. Started to blow the ole "White smoke" today and it was pretty heavy. i am stripping down the car and replacing the gaskets, getting new temp gauge, and so on. Good thing i dont need the car or i'd be screwed.
