What's this? New 351w owner asking dumb questions.

Hey guys, just bought a '93 with a carbed 351w. It was a project for some guy before he got bored with it and sold it to me. I'm workin on getting it started for the first time and I don't know what a lot of stuff on the engine is or does. I know I don't know much but everybody starts somewhere (at least I'm not into gay ricer shit.)

1. I know this is the water elbow but I don't know what this other smaller connection I circled is supposed to go to or what it does.
2,3. The only thing I can guess is that 3 might be a temp. sending unit, but then what if anything goes in 2?
4. I have no idea. Maybe just a mounting point for something?

Also, I'm not running a heater in the car and was wondering what is the best thing to do with the heater hose attachments on the water pump? Plug them both? Run one into the other? What signals the pump to start pumping water into them anyway?
Thanks a lot for all the help guys. I'll have some more questions later.

-Dave

number 1 goes from the water neck to the water pump on the small upper fitting, you have to buy a molded hose from a parts store. should be fairly cheap

number 2 is a spot where another fitting goes that connects to a water hose that feeds into your heater core.

number 3 is your temp sensor (you were correct)

number 4 i think is were the had the origanal coil bolt to, but you dont need to use that one nor worry about it

welcome to the fourm and good luck, there are some really smart people on here and can help you with your build

oh haha one more thing.

if your not running a heater then you will want to take a hose and run it from #2 and feed it to the small lower fitting on the water pump (located all the way to the left in your pic)

1. Like 78mach1 mentioned is the bypass - 90 degree hose connects from there to the water pump to bypass the thermostat when the engine is cold.
2. Also like 78mach1 mentioned is for the heater core if you are using one.
3. That fitting is a temp sensor fitting for an Autometer temperature gauge.
4. some fool plugged a hole with an ugly rusty bolt that doesn't need to be there.

Or you can buy a 5/8 rubber cap for the water pump in the HELP section at any local autoparts store and leave the plug in the intake.
