Exhaust Question

Hey Guys!

Its time to replace the exhaust in my 88 convertible. I was thinking of going with a set of equal length shorty headers, off-road h-pipe and turn downs instead of going all the way out the back. In doing this is there any kind of issues that I need to be concerned with? The car is Speed Density and bone stock except for under-drive pulleys and the smog pump being by-passed.

You mean turn downs after the mufflers? Either way, it is loud and you will have some exhaust smell in the car.

If you're talking about the o2 sensors, there will be bungs welded into the h-pipe for them, you just re-install them just like they were.

No tailpipes is alot louder inside and outside of the car no matter what muffler you use. Not to mention the exhaust gasses that will be inside the car on a daily driven vehicle. No tailpipes has absolutely no performance benefit so why do it? If you want a performance increase take the entire exhaust system off. Quiet cars that are fast are cool.

Yeah, I agree about it being louder inside the car. I guess my question was really more about the o2 sensors if I put an after market h-pipe on it. I just have to watch my cash flow right now. Several other things need attention too. The trans just started to grind a little going into 2nd if the rpm's are up and I deff have a broke ring or two in the #8 cylinder. I have an extension on the plug to keep it from fouling out. Uses way too much oil. But, I still have plenty of power and get good gas mileage. 20 to 21 mpg.

The oil consumption is probably valve guides or valve seals.

Seals have been replaced. The reason I say cracked rings is bacause the plug in #8 gets covered in oil. But this could be caused by the guides?

Bad guides or seals will cover the plug in oil as well. I had an 88 GT that was like that. Once I rebuild the heads everything was fine. Oil drains back thru the heads so it has a direct path to the cylinder if there is an area to leak thru. Sounds like a good reason to put some Twisted Wedge heads on it

I ran dumps after flows for a while, I got sick of the loud and smell (and I have cats and full emissions). I am back to full exhaust now. Sounds really good outside the car and when i get on it but after about 10 years of Flowmasters on my Mustangs, I think I've finally had enough of the drone.
