Setting A Goal

Hey y'all!

I got an 89 Mustang LX, long tube headers, 3.73s, u/d pulleys, and steeda triaxe shifter.

Yup, it's basically stock.

I'd like to build myself a 300-350hp stang that's a daily driver. Nitrous would be great, but I'm not factoring that in right now.

I guess the question is this: How much horsepower can I get out of my block with stock heads, and what mods are required for this purpose?

Thanks!

The stock heads are gonna have to go to meet your goals infact if your looking to be close to 350hp your gonna need a strocker or power adder. Most HCI setups are good for the 300hp level

It's mostly a budget issue. I'd love to grab a set of AFR heads, but here at Texas A&M tuition likes to cut into my car modification budget =( So I was curious what I could do in the meantime. As for the 350 goal range, I do indeed know that I'll have to do much larger modifications. I was curious as to what I can get out of my stock heads as of now.

nothing compared to aftermarket heads man. i am in college too, but i am saving my money little by little... by the time you pay for a nice port job to get some decent flow through the heads, you could buy a good set of AFR or trickflow.... Man alot of people will say to just save you money and get good stuff, but some people just feel like they have to have the stuff now. you could find some explorer intake and heads, but i wouldnt go that route man.

u dont have to have a stroker to make more than 350hp.. by jus changing the cam heads and intake would give u tht much.. add better fuel flow to the mixture ud get around 400 easy with proper tuning i believe

Are we talking flywheel horsepower or rear wheel horsepower? If you want to stay on a budget you should at least consider some GT40P heads from an 97 1/2 or newer Explorer. Those will give you a good chunk more horsepower than the stock E7 heads will be capable of. You can probably squeeze 300-325 flywheel horspower out of it. It will be fairly easy to get in the mid 12s with P heads, Explorer intake and a mild cam in addition to what you already have done to the car.

No thats not what I was saying. You refered to making 350-400RWHP with a stock 302 short block and a HCI set up. Typical 302 HCI set ups range 290-300+ RWHP. The stock block can handle 450-500 pushing it before you split it.

320+ rear wheel horsepower is fairly easy with off the shelf parts on a stock short block. 350+ is attainable if you spend a little extra on better heads and a custom cam.
