Nitrous question - Backfire vs. Afterfire

Hey guys, ive been working on the stang project and was thinking of putting nitrous on it b/c its cheap HP and a good power adder. But anyways i have never used it and was on Youtube and came across some nasty Nitrous backfires as well as some "afterfires" i saw they were called. My question is what are the two and whats the differents. And most importantly how do you prevent this stuff from happening? I dont wanna get scared away from nitrous but ive never used it before and dont really know what to do. So i was hoping ya guys could help answer a few questions and let me know what ya think and/or any advice ya have for a hopefully soon to be noob nitrous user. Thanks guys for the comments and feedback! - The Novice.

Good advice ^^

A good way to ensure you dont have any "rev limiter" accidents is using a window switch. Search around on this forum, theres lots of Nitrous threads with tons of good advice and info.

Always try to keep in mind that you want to start small, and work your way up. And even though its a pain in the ass to continuously pull plugs, make sure you keep an eye on their condition every few times you spray. The more Nitrous you spray *larger shots*.. the more often you need to check your plugs. Nothing beats being able to read your spark plugs. Even the best Wideband Air/Fuel systems and gauges dont know exactly whats going on in the cylinders. Search around.

Ok will do thanks guys. Also what about wet vs dry shot, i figured a dry shot kit would be better for a nitrous noob like me, i was thinking of the zex dry kit, but what do you guys think? Also i was just really wondering b/c it looks crazy what has to happen to make your care have an afterfire, i saw a vid and it was like a flame thrower coming from the tail pipes. JW. Thanks guys!

Make sure you have plenty of fuel and run some colder plugs.

Also, dry shots are nice, but for a first timer I would consider a simple wet nozzle. It just seems that keeping an ideal A/F ratio is easier with a wet shot. I know that some tuners don't even touch dry kits so that's something to keep in mind.

I've hit the rev limiter missing shifts in the past and not had any problems with backfires or anything. The main things to consider are using a good nitrous system, following their recomendations and directions, don't spray under 3000 rpm and make sure the pedal is to the floor when you spray. Wet kits on EFI cars that hae a plate between the intake and throttle body are the cause of alot of backfires. The wet kits that put the plate between the upper and lower intake don't seem to have this problem because the fuel and nitrous is sprayed down the intake runners instead of into the upper plenum. Dry kits are very user friendly and very hard to screw up. The dry kit design is simple and works very well. I would also suggest never using telflon tape on nitrous systems. The teflon tape gets caught up in solenoids. Use a small amount of pipe dope instead. I would also suggest taking your soleniods apart at least once a year to clean them out and check everything. They do get crud in them and do need rebuilding from time to time. A sticky solenoid can cause backfires and other problems.
