new intake
I want to put a new intake on my car so I used the search on hear to read some old threads and now I have a couple of questions. First off this is for an 86 5.0 with cat back flowmaster, k&n air filter and bypassed smog pump. I want to get in the 300s for hp and I was told the best way is head cam and intake from another thread I posted. The intakes I am looking at are the eldelbrock performer, trick flow street burner, and the cobra. My questions are:
1: Which will be best when I put on new heads and a cam later on down the road? 2: The first two are for idle to 5500 rpms. Is this a good choice or not? I'm not doing track, just street riding. 3: What size tb should I go with? I want to go with a 70mm because I don't want to have to change it later so will it work on my set-up so far? I read the cobra is only good up to 350hp and I want to supercharge in the future so I am leaning towards the other two. I know I should probably be going with heads and cam first but I want to do suspension mods first and can't afford to do all right now. I want to buy the heads and cam together to match them so I am going to get the intake now in preperation for the heads and cam. Any help is appretiated. |

I'm trying to spend as little as I need to but I will spend what I need to for getting one to work with new heads and cam later. I don't want to buy one now just to find out it won't work later because I didn't spend the extra money on a good one.

a tuner will put your car on the dyno and tune a chip for your ecu that optimizes performance

MAF conversion 1st...........I am not sure, but I think you are gonna run into problems with the piston clearence as well in an 86, I think they have flat top w/o reliefs. may just want to look into finding a longblock from someone for sale.

yea you need to convert to MAF otherwise your wasting your money and its just gonna make it run worse. like posted above you will also run into clearence issues with the pistons...
before you do anything convert everything over to maf

The Cobra/GT40/Explorer intake makes equal or more torque than most intakes under 4500-5000 rpm. They are cheaper as well. Makes a good choice if your not going all balls high rpm down the 1/4.

Well I decided I will wait and get the suspension and mass air this year and do the heads, cam, intake, and tune next year. What do I do about the piston clearance though? Is there a way to fix it for when I upgrade?

i think you can either have valve reliefs put in your pistons, or you can buy aftermarket pistons.
im not sure but you might be able to use 87-92 302 pistons but others will chime in if im wrong |

when you have some time, spend some time reading in the tech section of my website - lots of data on the power different street intakes make.
