Im freakin out here

I have checked and reset the timing like 10 times now and still no luck. I took out sp # 1 turned the engine by hand with a friend having his finger in the # 1 hole. Set the Balancer at zero once it reached the compression cycle, and dropped the distro in with the rotor button on top of the plug # 1. It starts and runs terribly. I put a timing light on it and tried setting it at 10 btc- 14 btc and no matter where i put it there is a terrible amount of backfiring coming out of my exhaust. What could possibly be wrong when the timing is set correctly?

timing

Did you put the distributor in lined up on the #1 plug or the #1 plug wire on the distributor cap. Should line it up with the #1 plug wire on the distributor cap.

#1 plug wire on the distro cap. I think my plugs might be off, i thought they were off the other day so i moved them all by 1, but now i think they were right after looking at a diff pic of the firing order. Im gonna have to try later today when i get outta class.

Start with #1 on the distributor cap (almost always marked) and put them back in this order going counter clockwise.

Were you having this problem before or after you had the distributor out? You could be 180* off.
