Question on GT40 vs GT40P heads

I know GT40P heads have smaller exhaust runners and the spark plugs are at a different angle which mean you need special headers. But, I know the Ford Explorer at one time used actual GT40 heads before they switched to the common GT40P heads. At what year did this switch take place? Then, what is the year range that uses actual GT40 heads?

Thank you in advanced.

I believe they started using the P heads after '97. The one I pulled my Ps out of was a '98.

Mid 1997 is when they started using the P heads. 96 to early 97 had the standard GT40 heads. I wouldn't let the special header issue deter you from getting P heads. They are a better head. Many companies make P specific headers and there are also headers out there that fit both styles of heads.

even though the exhaust runners smaller, its better designed so it flows better regardless of being smaller

I don't think the runners are smaller but the exhaust valves are smaller and the exhaust runners are more efficient than the regular GT40 heads.

I've heard that if you run long tube headers the plug angle doesn't interfere with anything. Dunno if that's true or not because my Ps never got installed.

I have the "P" heads with ford motorsport ceramic coated stainless headers and you have to use a plug socket and a wrench on the end of it to get all but one plug out... no extensions will make the angle. love the power though.
