blew my rear end =)

hey so i blew my rear diff apart this last weekend, stuck with moms jeep for three weeks untill i go home next. basicly trying to figure out what would be the cheapest and yet most cost effective way to replace the rear end. what i need to fix the 8.8 would be a carrier, spider gears, ring and pinion, and what ever else i might come up with. but on the other hand i could get a used 9" and put in there. but with the 9" i might not be able to afford everythign needed to do the swap. i will need the axle, new wheels because i still have the 4 lug wheels. other than that i know i will redo the rear breaks. what about the drive shaft? will i need a diff one than stock? what all would i have to modify on the 9" to fit my car? what other precautions would i need to think about? basicly i need a list of stuff i will have to do to do the 9" swap. if it sounds like too much money i will just put the 8.8 back together

put the 8.8 back together. Get a diff and carrier from a late model cobra on ebay and a new ring and pinion set, upgraded 31 spline axles. For about $500 you'll have a pretty stout rear end.

Hey man, I fully built my rear end on my old 94GT. I went on summit and picked up Superior 31spline Axles $289.99 ,Ford 4:10 Gear Set $ 159.99, Ford Trac Loc Diff. $259.99. So your looking around just over 700bucks but this is a very solid kit and will hold up to about 600-700HP.

yea just a basic stock 8.8 that needs a rebuild.

cool. no problem. I said it needed a rebuild (costs around $100.00) I'll just use it for mine and toss in 31 spline spider gears.
thats the cool thing about a diff. you can make it stronger when you rebuild it.

does that look like a good list of parts? and which rebuild kit do i need, the one just for the axles or the one with all the shims and seals and bearings for everything? seems like the parts would come with all the stuff i need so i figure i only need the one with the bearings for the axle but i dont know. other than that i think thats all i need, any other suggestions?

get the brenspeed one with all the shims, bearings, etc...

it's cheaper to buy the whole kit and do it right the first time.

when you put it back together be sure you check backlash and everything else. whatever spacers you take out, install them back into the same place they came out, even the caps that hold the carrier in and bolts need to go back to the same spot, even with the new carrier, etc. and when you check everything with the white "paint" yer marks should be slighty farther back than in the middle of the ring gear teeth. if you havent done it before i would recomend somebody who has there to help you with it. its an easy job but can also be easily done wrong and mess somethin up real quick.

well i talked to a few guys, considering im putting down a whole 240hp im just rebuilding a stock rear end, ive got a carrier just going to buy a new ring and pinion and rebuild it with the new bearings and such through the whole axle. no use in putting in stronger 4lug axles when im going to be putting 5 lug axles in there sooner or later anyway. so im saying with the 28 spline axles ive got and putting in another carrier and ring and pinion. just no use being in college to spend all the money to put handle 600-700hp when im only running 240 now.
