Long Tube Header Install?

Hey, I am going to be getting some long tube headers in the near future and I was under the impression I could install them but I have been reading some other peoples experiences and it seems a lot more involved. So I have an 89 5.0 LX and was wondering if you guys have installed them on your cars? and if so what steps/procedures did you have to do. Are there any brands that are better than others ect. Just don't want to get over my head and if it seems to complicated for me I'll just have the shop do it. Thanks for any impute/stories/thoughts you have on this.

Mike

The factory headers come off easy. Once you get them off take the nut off of each engine mount so you can jack up the engine. A floor jack and a block of wood on the crank pulley will lift the engine enough to slide the headers in from the bottom. With a little patience and geometry it is a fairly easy job.

just put the car on jack stands so you can lift up the engine.
Engine has to be lifted up an inch or two to get LT's on/off.

Drivers side header is the real bugger to get on around the steering shaft.

You'll probably have to disconnect the steering shaft also.

if you do it on the lift, you can either jack the motor up some while its still on the ground and use a hoist that goes across the strut towers, or from underneath use a screw jack. its fairly easy to do if you have access to those things. i dropped in mine when i dropped in the new motor.

Get a H or X pipe that matches the headers you buy. BBK and MAC make headers and H/X pipes with or without cats.

an easy way if your using a car lift is to lift the car, unbolt the the motor mounts, then use a screw jack on the crank pully, basically what darrel said.
