believe you bring the number one piston to the top and put a mark on the top of your harmonic balancer....not positive on that....if you cant see the marks just pull the spout connector and move the dizzy a little and drive it...if you are detonating (pinging noise) back it off a little at a time till it stops....

get a timing light with a knob ( i've got a relatively cheap ACTRON timing light that i got at autozone ) , then all you need to do is to make 1 mark on the balancer at 0 and adjust the knob, i've found that to be much easier then trying to read the balancer or making more then 1 mark on it ( my eyes aren't the greatest anyway tho )

Get a really bright floresent light and go under the car then look at the balancer. I couldnt see any number with a normal flash light but as soon as I put the timing light to it I could see it very clear. You may have to hit it with some solvent and a rag...

Clean the balancer. The numbers are there but most likely they are dirty or have a small layer of rust over them.

before you go nuts trying to find the timing marks and doing what has been suggested may I suggest that you determine if your balancer is any good? The stock ones are notorious for the rubber islolater ring tearing and the timing marks slipping around to where they shouldn't be. If it isn't obvious to you that the balancer is toast try to wiggle it or turn it by hand. If you get any movement at all or find rubber hanging out where it shouldn't be, you have found your problem and can proceed from there- if you aren't comfortable that you have determined the status of the balancer, try findiing TDC. Be careful here, there are two TDC's in play per complete cycle so you need to know that both valves are closed when the piston is at TDC, that one is where you should be able to see the 0 on the dampner. If you need more help, pm me and I can walk you through the whole process

+1, when i did my timing i had to get down there and rub/wipe the balancer b4 i could see any marks on it what so ever. Than you should be able to see and place a mark on it down there

+1 on the possibility of a bad stock balancer.
