early 90's have gt40 and 97 1/2 and up have gt40p

and yes you will proly gain about 40hp (crank) from the heads and intake over stock.

The GT-40P iron heads off Explorers are great head.
Flow close to aluminum GT40Y head numbers.

The spark plugs mount at a different angle and can have header
clearance problems with some headers, most header do clear though

1996 to early 1997 V8 Explorers and Mountaineers had GT40 heads. Mid 1997 to 2001 had GT40P heads. The P heads are more desireable and have more performance potential.

Some headers do not work with P heads because of spark plug interference. The spark plug angle is different on P heads which is one of the reasons they make more power. The spark plug is positioned closer to the center of the cylinder. 90 degree boot plug wires help.

*deep breath*
the GT-40 heads that were found on the 1993-1995 cobras were also found on the 5.8L Lightning, and the 1996-1997.5 Explorers and Mountaineers.

The Explorer heads have a larger combustion chamber than the cobra heads, and when bolted onto a stock bottom end, will actually lower the compression ratio slightly. It is always best to have the heads machined down to a 63-64cc chamber before installing them (also makes a nice mating surface to the block)

the GT-40P heads were found on the 1997.5-2001 Explorers and Mountaineers. They featured a smaller combustion chamber that, when bolted to a stock bottom end, produced a ~9.5:1 compression ratio. These heads also have the revised spark plug location... but fear not! Most shorty unequal length headers work on GT-40P heads. You will USUALLY have to swap out the spark plug boot on the #7 wire to one with a 90° angle.

/rant

ok, I feel better now... can we all maybe try to spread GOOD information for once?
