another dumb question

Man I feel like a newbie lately...lol... what are the advantages and disadvantages of high or low compression motors....I am building my stroker right now and just wonder if I should mill the heads and bring the compression up or not what would be the advantage or dis advantage...thanks

Come on, you know better than that. Just about any compression is sutible for Nitrous. High or low, doesnt matter.

MX >

If your staying N/A, run as much compression as you can get away with, and still run pump gas. Increased cylinder pressure equates to more power.

Low - 7.5:1 - 9.5:1

Medium - 10.0:1 - 12.75:1

High - 13:1 and above.

This is for gasoline burning engines.

When your around race cars all your life, you tend to see ridiculous compression numbers. Lots of people think 11.5:1... 12.0:1 is high compression. Thats just getting started in my book. If you dont want your N/A motor to be a slug, run the highest number you can get away with.

Low is anything less than 9.0:1. High is anything that will not run on pump gas which is typically 10.0:1 or higher. You can get away with high compression ratios on pump gas if you keep the ignition timing real lax but horsepower will be down. I ran my 12:1 engine on 93 octane on the street but I also only ran about 24 degrees of total timing with that fuel. There was a big difference in horsepower. The difference was running 9.3s on race fuel and 9.8s on pump gas.

I really don't recommend it. It kind of defeats the purpose of running high compression. I only did it because I wanted drive the car daily on the street....and prove the world wrong. Everyone said there is no way you can drive that car on the street so I drove it every day in the city and down the highway. I had a toggle switch hooked up to the high speed retard on the Digital 7 that pulled out 8 degrees of timing when I flipped the switch.

I'm finishing up a "tune up" on this Cobra and then I'm taking a break for a while. Trying to square some things up and maybe move to Las Vegas.

That is the game plan. I have my land up for sale and will put my house up for sale after the land sells. I have a fairly large chunk of money sitting as well. By the time we get everything in order we will almost be able to pay cash for a house equivalent to the one we have in Las Vegas. I'm not sure what I'm going to do for work out there. There are many options and I'm multi skilled so I'm not too worried about that. Lake Havitsu is another possible area we are looking at. It will be at least a year before we make the move.
