Switching to Synthetic - What should i get?

Hey guys im thinking of switching to synthetic oil and was wondering your opinion on brand/company.
I have never used synthetic oil before do i dont know what all i need, if anything different. So i was wondering if these companies made packs that have all ya need to make the switch to synthetic oil.
I was also wondering what weight oil should i use? 10W30? I live in Michigan but woiuld only drive this car in the summer time, if that matters. So i shouldnt have to worry about winter at all.
Final question in your opinion is synthetic worth it? I have heard good things but i like to hear different peoples opinions. Thanks guys for any help -The Novice.

Is synthetic worth it? Depends I'm sure you will get lots of opinions that are not based on any real facts, test data or figures. For every test that "proves" one thing, there is another that "proves" something different.
Standard disclaimer:
Statistics are like bikinis. What they reveal is suggestive, but what they conceal is vital.

The thinner easier flowing synthetic can leak from areas that the thicker conventional oil wouldnt make it through on older cars. you will get minimal gains in performance, synthetic transfers heat better and lubricates better. Its not usually recommended for higher milage motors though.

That 1 mph could be the result of other things, not nessicarily because you switched oils.

i hear you but i assure you it's from the oil. i'm very meticulous when it comes to testing parts. i go to the track and make several passes, log the weather and track conditions, make 1 change and make several runs to see if the change worked or hurt. as far as the oil, my car used to mph 103 to 104 NEVER more then that. as soon as i changed oil it would regularly mph 105 - 106 . ( i used to race that car EVERY WEEKEND so it wasn't like i made a pass in the middle of the summer, changed oil and came back in the winter when the air was cooler and made a pass and said wow this oil makes more power )

At Fun Ford Weekend they did a test on a GT500 w/ regular oil then swapped in the synthetic and it gained bout 6hp. I like running it in my cars. Like metioned before I wouldn't run it on a high mileage cars cuz they say it will clean out scars and you can get blow by and other problems.

I believe that all my cars deserve the finest oil and oil filters. I always put Royal Purple 10-30/10-40 depending on weather, and a K&N Oil Filter. They say you gain horsepower but I can just feel the engine and parts running smoothly and efficently. But its just like everything out there, personal preference.

Royal Purple is about the best out there. It has been proven to make a few more horsepower than the rest of the synthetics on the market. All synthetics will lubricate better than conventional oil. I would not fall into the "75,000 mile oil change" bullshit though. Synthetic or not I change my oil and filter every 2500 miles. The more often you change your oil, the longer the engine will last regardless of the claims of the oil manufacturer.

Synthetics handle heat much better than conventional oils, and don't break down as fast.

I use Royal Purple in my differential, motor, supercharger, and Synchromesh in my Tremec.

Like Darrell said - I don't trust the "They last forever" crap either. Change them frequently, and your moving parts will last longer.

Restorer

I use RESTORE in my wife's Miata with like 155,000 miles on it, I think it works well in a high mileage vehicle. I wouldn't use it in my Mustang though, at least until the clock rolls over 100,000 miles.
