bought a car

hey guys so i bought a 91 GT monday and this is what i got, ugly ass 4-spoke pacer rims, flowmaster 40s, performace products upper and lower and throttle body(all 3 polished) a second rate paint job(the guys had good intentions, just looked like they didnt take there time on it) its an automatic stock gearing. the guy "claimed" the motor only has 12000 miles on the motor which he might be right bc the motor is extremely clean for being stock. ok so 2 small questions, 1.)he has bosch platinum 2's in it and has a rough idle' almost stalls, could the plugs be it? 2.) the tranny shifts way to soon almost feels like it races to the final drive, what could it be? -thanks in advance!-

If one or more of the plugs or wires is bad then they might cause a rough idle. I'd give it a tune up since the car is new to you.

As far as the tranny problem, I'm not sure. Its hard to diagnose something like that over the internet.

Probably not. Its pretty obvious if the cam isn't stock.

Its a 91GT so it is a mass air car.

Thats what I was going to suggest. The stock throttle valve bushing on the throttle body linkage was a rubber or plastic bushing. These dry out and crack, and fall out then your TV cable is out of adjustment. Ford carries a new brass style bushing to replace the old style now. Try checking that bushing, if there isnt one. Put the $5 brass on it, before you adjust the tv cable itself. That could be all you need to do for the trans.

could it be that the new maf is not calibrated for the stock 19# injectors and it's making it idle/run rough?

hey im back, ok TV cable is adjusted, plugs and wires just put them on, timing is mint, but i think i found the problem(maybe) i replaced the plugs anf they were black as the ace of spades(and they were bosch platinum 2's) i replaced them with autolites and 8mm wires, as i was finishing, i noticed the cap was moving, i pulled up on it and where the cap clamps down, that part was tight but where the plastic ends it lifts up and down, now i know thats not good at all but could that be my problem? oh and also i replaced the plugs and it smokes a lil bit but i think it might be the timing too. im really stuck here so if you help i greatly appreciate it.

Hey, Well back when I had my 94GT, I had a rough idle and it sounded like it had a decent cam in it. 5.0s Have tons of vacuum lines. Check your upper/lower intake for an unplugged vacuum line. Mine was the PCV hose was unplugged. Are you throwing a check engine light?. Check those hoses. I almost guarante thats the case.

Im confused. You said the timing was mint. Then said that it smokes and you think it cause of the timing.

If its smoking and the plugs were black it sounds like your running rich as hell and fouling plugs. You might have a stuck injector or fuel pressure regulator bad. Also that PCV he spoke of is notorious on the efi 5.0s for coming out of the intake.

Replace that distributor cap, could be the problem. What's the timing set at? And define rough idle. Is it choppy or does is roll? If it rolls or dips low it could be the TPS.
