347 Pistons

I am new to this forum and now I have ask some questions.

1. What is a good price to pay for a FRPP B347 motor with one broken/chipped above top ring piston? It cost $2595 new without camshaft but the motor currently has a Comp Cam XE274 with roller lifters. I would like to remove the Hypuertec pistons and put forged pistons in it.

2. What is a good forged piston to put in the 347 motor, I have heard about the wrist pin and oil ring overlapping. Is this a problem to look for? I was thinking about Probe pistons. I already have AFR 185 HEADS, 1.6 SVO rockers, Accufab 75mm throttle body, RPM intake, AFM Powerpipe.

I would check to see if there is any damage to the cylinder wall and to see what the cause of the chip was? I run probe srs forged pistons in my 347. Dont worry about piston pin and oil ring overlapping that is an old problem they had years ago. There have been many rumors started about it over the years and many people choose the 331 over it but whatever its there power that their leaving under the table.

347 Pistons

Thanks for the reply. The walls on the pistons look fine. When you look down into the cylinder of the broke piston, you see about a 1/2 chip on the top of the piston and you can see the top ring. It just looks like it may need to be honed out and put back together. He is asking $1000 for the B347 shortblock from FRPP. The part number is M-6009-B347 on the block and this is what it contains including the Comp Cam XE 274.

Shortblock components include:
• 5.0L “Sportman” block with 4.030" bore
• KB-246 +.030" cast hypereutectic aluminum alloy pistons with .912” piston pins
• Grant piston rings P/N CC4000H030
• M-6200-D50 SAE 4130 forged steel connecting rods
• Federal Mogul rod and main bearings
• M-6303-B340 cast iron 3.40" stroke crank

From an economical standpoint, if there is no damage to the effected bore, I would replace the damaged piston and rings only and run it. If you are determined to change to forged, I would go with Ross pistons. I had a set of Probe SRPs and there is no comparison between the two brands. The quality of the Ross pistons was second to none. While some would argue this statement, if changing out the pistons, then send the block to your machine shop (unless you have the necessary measuring instruments to check bore and a ball hone) to have the pistons matched to the bores and have the cylinders deglazed. Having the rotating assembly rebalanced would be on my list as well, especially if you plan on upper end RPMs and or spray. As far as price, as cheap as you can get it. Since it's a Sportsman block with the bore at 4.030 (standard is 4.000), the max I would go on a rebore is 4.040 so any serious damage to a bore requiring more than .010 to clean it up would render the block a boat anchor. Why not check with Woody and see what he gets for a short block?
