Setting Roller rockers
I just picked up my heads from the shop getting a valve job done. I want to put them on the car but i have a question about the roller rockers. These are stud mounted and they have an adjustment allen screw on the mounting bolt for the rocker. What is the proper way of setting these up. I asume i would install the heads and tourqe them down, then install the rollers. But should i run the allen screws out all the way then tighten down the studs and then tighten the allen screws? But how far!?

studs should already be on heads...install rocker, and adjust with hex. then lock allen down against stud...the allen keeps the adjustment from backing off

Re: Setting Roller rockers
Make sure the valves are closed when Adjusting the rockers. ( I don't know how much you know ) Loosen the allen screw most of the way then tighten the nut with your finger till you feel some resistance. With a wrench turn it one flat ( 1 sixth of a turn ) then tighten the allen screw. ( Don't let the wrench slip ) Some instructions will tell you to turn it half a turn but I don't recommend that. To loose is better then to tight. If it makes much noise when you start it up you can adjust them a little tighter. I just installed some prw rockers and it was a piece of cake. Have fun

Valve Adjust
The way I do it is of the motor has been sittin for awhile after you install the heads make sure the rockers are on and snug with allen screws snug with the ignition disconnected I turn the motor over for a second or two so the lifters get pumped up with oil in case from sitting some or all of them bled down after that take off your dist cap and manually turn the motor over with a ratchet on the crank pulley starting on cylinder no. 1 TDC on compression stroke with allen screw loose tighten the rocker nut just until you feel slight resistance when you try and spin the pushrod with your fingers then tighten 1\2-3\4 of a turn more"I tend to go more towards the 3\4. make sure you do both intake and exhaust at same time. You can do that because the motor is at TDC for that cylinder. Follow the firing order"for me its easier that way so I dont forget to do one. Its not that hard just take your time and dont forget to tighten all the allen set screws.. Have fun!! P.S. you dont have to do the first part if you dont want to but if the motor has been sittin for more than a month chances are at least one of the lifters have bled down and after a few miles or driving cycles you might have to readjust cuz it might get a little loud. not enough to hurt anything usually but thats how I do it....

you need to make sure that the lifter for the valve is on the bottom of the cam lobe prior to adjusting your valves...hydraulic lifters are set by removing all play from the valve train...as in between your rocker arm and lifter...
get the lifter on the bottom of the cam lobe and then start to spin the pushrod with your fingers while tightening the nut down on the rocker...once all play is removed (the pushrod will stop turning) you are good.

When the intake valve starts to close, adjust the exhaust. When the exhaust valve starts to open, adjust the intake. Do one cylinder at a time. This is the proper way and will place the lifter on the base circle of the cam on the valve that will be adjusted.

Ok, I understand now. I purchased these heads with the roller rockers already on them. They are used so that's why I have no instructions. Plus even if I did I would rather have some advice from people who have done it. I consider myself a moderate Mech. I am a diesel Mech. for the Air Force. And i work mainly on T-Bird SC's and AWD laser/talon/eclipse vehicles. This stud mounted rocker set up is a new one for me. My brother has done it a few times and he will be assisting me but I wanted to know what was going on before I tore into it. The car is still running now, i had it out last night as a matter of fact and got my ass handed to me by an red SS Camero.
The heads are going to be installed ASAP, and the Hunt For Red October will begin! I'll just spray everything down with some cam lube or that dry start oil for the initial start up. Thanks alot everyone for the input.
