new heads for 86gt

What do I need to do to put new heads on an 86gt? I've been reading that you can't just bolt them on because of the pistons. What needs to be done so that I can put them on? I'm looking at the trick flow kit, but I may just piece something together. I would like to get 350hp at the wheels. I plan doing suspension upgrades (springs, shocks, struts, cc plates, lower control arms, subframe connectors) and 3.73 gears this winter and next winter build the top end and finishing my exhaust sometime after that. So far I have a cat back flowmaster 2 chamber and k&n air filter. Is it worth building this engine or would it be cheaper to buy a crate engine? I wasn't planning on building up the bottem end, or even ripping it apart for that matter. Is there an easy way to solve this problem?

New pistons or a short block from an 87-95 Mustang.

Thanks, thats what I was afraid of. I think I'll look into some crate engines before I drop a ton of money into this one.

The Ford Racing 514 is nice.

A 514 would be nice But then I would have to change alot more things too. How hard is it to change to carburated? I see thats how most crate engines are.

Its not hard but just because the crate engine has a carbureted intake doesn't mean you can't use EFI. You could buy a long block from Ford Strokers, DSS, Kuntz, CHP, etc. and put whatever intake on that you want.

Tell me if this sounds right.
MAF-$500
Top end kit-$2500
Pistons-$250
TB+EGR for trick flow kit-$250
Fuel Injectors-$300
Total of $3800 less tax for about 300hp.
I'm guessing to get 350 or greater I would have to build the bottem so I can get a whole rotating assembly for about a grand which would make it $4550, give or take. And if I stroke it I would have to pay for the machine work, and probably port and polish the heads since I'm having everything else done. That would probably put me in the 400's I'm guessing? But after all of that would it just be cheaper to buy a crate engine that still has room to build? I know I could turbo or spray now but I would rather have all motor.

That's the only difference? Damn, that sounds like the way to do it.

Yep. All of the sensor and such can be swapped off of your current engine. You would need to upgrade to mass air though.

Well, I think what I will do is find a lx, do an engine swap and sell of everything I take out. My 86 is in almost perfect condition and I think it will be worth something down the road so I don't think I want to get rid of the original engine. What do you think would be a good engine? I found the 514 engine you said earlier. Would that be a good one to go with? If I go this route the more hp the better and I will probably go carburated. I want it for street/track. 625hp at the motor sounds good. Or would it be better to build one? Thanks for your help, I really appreciate it. You probably just saved me alot of wasted money. I think going this way will be more power for what I spend on it.

I was actually joking about the 514. You could buy a 347 and make enough power to satisfy your need for speed. With a 514 you will have so much money tied up in the rest of the car to handle the torque and horsepower.

So something along the lines of this? Ford Racing 347 Sealed Race Engine - JEGS

I assume I will need a new tranny as well. Would that be an actual 347 or a stroked 302? I might end up building one though because why buy it complete just to change it later to get it the way I want it.

All 347s are stroked 302s. I'd call Ford Strokers for a quote before I'd buy a Ford Racing engine.

that would be a stroked 302. your best bet is to call fordstrokers, chp, kuntz, or dss like darrell said and put your topend of choice on it.

I'll have to check those out, but if its still a 302 wouldn't it still top out at 600hp? I know thats more than I want now but if I ever decide to go more I want to be able to. And I was reading on another thread on here that 347s aren't the most reliable either. I forget what it said exactly but it could of been someone not knowing what they were saying either.

I don't know what would make a 302 "top out" at 600 horsepower. Anyone that says a 347 is less reliable than a 302 should not open their mouth because they lack the intelligence to give any advice. A stock block can only handle so much horsepower and/or rpm but whether it is a 302 or 347 has no effect on reliability.
