Quick speedometer cable question

I've got an 86 5.0 and when I was taking the tranny out the other day to check on the clutch and prep for a new throwout bearing install, I noticed the speedometer cable assembly was just kinda barely hanging in the tranny, obviously broken. I've seen the new speed sensors on 50resto and cables and they say the sensors are for different years and tell the PCM the transmission speed, blah blah blah. Well my car is no longer fuel injected, it's carbed, so I need to know if I can get just a new speedometer cable and plug it straight into the transmission, or do I still need a new speed sensor to just act as a connector to adapt the cable into the transmission?
