just don't powershift it, i killed a bran new t 5 on the 3rd pass down the track i . powershifted 3rd and sheared off most of the teeth off and ruined the clustergears in a low 12 sec n/a 5.0 on dragradials.

500 hp, I'd start with a T5-Z and see how long that lasts. If you kill it, then it is time to step up to a G-force or TKO or T-56. I'm still using T5s in both my mustangs and haven't had a failure yet.

oh and i keep tryign to find specs but i fail, is the t-5z and the t5 the same gear ratios??? i hope the t5z has a lower first so i can actually use it with my 3.73's

"The T-5z is a 1993 Cobra T-5 with 2.95 first gear set and .63 over drive. It has the best of everything. Hardened gears, short throw factory shifter, steel front bearing retainer, and tapered output shaft bearing ands a seven tooth speedometer gear. Best of all it has a torque rating of 330ft/lbs based on 100,000 mile usage. The stock T-5Z can handle up to 450 hp when not drag raced. "

would the T-5Z be a smart investment even if it were to see the track every other week...slicks... ~6500 rpm shift points?

If the car was going to see a lot of track duty and is making 500 hp, then I'd probably go with the G-force T-5.
