87/91 rear end interchangeable?

My friend has a 87 5.0 with stock rearend gears and i have a 91 with 3.73 and we were looking to trade entire rearends because i want gas mileage and he wants to race. I was wondering if they are interchangeable because doesnt mine (the 91) have two extra shocks than the earlier fox's? which would mean my rearend housing has extra shock mounts, correct?

Yes they are the same 8.8's

All 5.0 8.8s would be compatable.

87s got quad shocks also. If your friends car doesnt have them, he probably got urethane bushings in lower control arms.

'87 to '93 are all the same.

you will probably get a little worse mileage , just a little fyi. if you don't believe me check your mpg now and i'll bet you a dollar it'll be worse after the rear swap unless all your driving is on the hiway. your car will have to work harder to get up to speed with the stock gears compared to the 373s

maybe, but when i went from the stockers on my 88 to 3.73's all of my mileage went down. Maybe its because i have a lead foot because its so much fun ever since..

Dude and even if you did get better gas mileage it would only be like 1 mpg no joke. Its not worth the swap at all. Your friend is getting free 3.73's while your getting free pile of shit gears
