stock tranny?
If I get a 347 stroker putting out about 450hp would the stock manual tranny in an 86 gt be capapble of handling the power? If not what would you suggest.

sure it'll hold, if you drive it like an old lady all the time but what fun is that ?? get a TKO 500 or 600 or a c 4, they build some aods that will handle that kinda power also

Like 86 Notch said, it will hold up if you drive it like an old lady. TKO600 or a G-Force T5 will work flawlessly.

Alright I guess I'll have to add that to my build list. I wouldn't want to be seen as driving like an old lady now would I?

The TKO600 is a better trans than the 500. It shifts fine. The Tremecs are tighter than T5s so the shift feel is different. Once you get used to it T5s will feel like they don't shift for shit. I've got a TKO600 laying in my shop right now that shifts just fine over 6000 rpm. Once you start making big horsepower combined with high rpm (7000+) these transmissions (T5, Tremec and G-Force) can give you shifting grief which is why you will always see Jerico and Liberty transmissions in race cars as long as the class they are in allows them.

but do you powershift it ? that's what kills T5s , not necessarily the amount of power you are making.

+1 power shifting = untimely death of a T5.
Gforce makes a dogface kit for the T5 that is made for high RPM shifting and will handle some powershifting.

your spending thousands on a crate motor and not any other $ on the trans or rear end?

+1 i dont powershift my t-5 thats proly why its still alive i dont think its worth the tenth or two that i would gain. if i just make my car faster then it needs to be i wont need to powershift for the easy street class i am competeing in. 11.5 and slower.

The TKO600 looks like the winner to me. Will that mount up no problem or will I need a new support? |

Yeah, it's worth at least a days work and $1300 to replace the T5...lol

It will last for a while. I got 2 seasons of powershifting out of my 91 GT. Probably about 250 passes before it failed. I was probably a little lucky with that one. Either way, I don't see how its at least a days work and $1300 to replace a T5. It takes about 2 hours to swap out a T5 in a fox body and you can find good T5s for $500-$600 used. If I was going to spend $1300 on a new transmission I'd get a Tremec or a G-Force.

I never said you can buy a Tremec for $1300. I said I would buy a Tremec before I'd spend $1300 ($1395 to be exact) on another T5 that is known to fail. So why not spend another $600 and never have to buy another transmission? Or even better yet, shop around a bit and take your time and you will find new Tremecs ridiculously priced in the $1200-$1500 range from guys that got in over there head and are now selling the parts that they have.
