Water temperature

I just installed some new Autometer gauges one being the water temp. I know the original car gauge ran to 270 but the new one only runs to 250. After a while of driving hard and not so hard the temp seems to stay around 230, is that running to hot or is that normal? I'm running an Taurus elec fan on high speed wire with a Delta Current Control unit with underdrive pullies. Thanks for all your help in advance.

That's the max I would ever want to see. 200 range would be alot safer with a small cushion for safety.

I have no idea what a Delta Current Control is but that Taurus fan should be keeping it cool. What thermostat is in it? How hot is it outside when it is running 230 degrees? I know in extremely hot temperatures there isn't much you can do. My Suburban ran pretty hot in Las Vegas when the temp got over 100 degrees.

pull the thermostat and see if that helps. if the temp stays low then try putting a cooler thermostat in. your cooling fan control may need to be adjusted. I would let the car cool off then start it and let it run until the upper hose starts to get warm. this indicates the thermostat has opened at that point i would adjust the temp control for the fan until the fan kicks on. give her a try and let us know how it goes.

Did you replace the tempature sender? Also make sure that the fan actually works when hot. My dad's car had the electrical go out on him. So we jerry rigged the fan to always be on. Needless to say it didnt overheat anymore. Also, make sure that any gaps are closed off around the radiator. It tends to reduce the cooling power of the fan.

It has a 180 or 185 degree thermostat, the outdoor temp is anywhere from 95 to 100 last week.

Yes I did replace the sender with the new one that came with the Autometer gauge. The fan works but it seems to hit the high speeds too late.

Pulling the termostat can make the problem worse. I run a restrictor with a 3/4" hole in it and no stat. The highest temp I've seen on a 100 degree day at the track after a run is 210. Normal street use around town on 90+ days is 195. I use a Moroso electric pump, 14" Be-Kool pusher fan and a Summit aluminum (universal) radiator.

I cranked the car after sitting from 9 PM till 4 PM the next day and did what you advised, the top hose started to get warm at about 160 - 170 as far as the new gauge shows. What would be your advice? Thanks for all your help guys!

as soon as the stat opens and the upper hose gets hot that is when you should start backing down the adjustment on the temp control unit. you want the fan to kick on shortly after the stat opens.
