Although the 5.0 engines are solid, your better off getting your hands on a PI SOHC 4.6L. For emissions reasons, this is the best reccommendation. Shouldnt be hard to find a used one, in great condition for a few hundred bucks with wiring harness, and ECU. The swap is easy if you use a PI 4.6. Its basically a k-member swap, then plug and play from there.

Push rod motor all the way. Not as hard as some would lead you to believe. You staying EFI or going carbed? With a 5.0 / 5.8 you don't have to change the K member. I did a swap into a 95 and was even able to modify most of the old style brackets to fit. I did delete the AC but that's not all that hard to put in either.

If you dont have to worry about inspection, then go with a 5.8. I only recommended a 4.6 because of the possibility of inspection and emissions.

If you switch to a pushrod, you'll need all the brackets that go with it. The k-member CAN be modified, but i'd recommend getting a tubular one made for a smallblock. The swap isnt hard at all, just make sure you've got all your eggs in your basket before you tear into the car. Plan for the car to be down for awhile.
