Advice on inline electric fuel pumps

Okay I put a cheap Carter in line fuel pump on my 83 carbed convertible, 5.0 stock, it lasted about 2 months and ran into the following problem.

Started as a hesitation, now drops out and won't pump. I mounted it in the engine bay (not near the tank) and it can be heard running but won't pull the fuel consistently. Did I mount it too far from the tank? It mentioned only to keep it low and no higher than 24 inches above tank.

The filter is clear (and before pump) and there are no restrictions in fuel line as I can siphon fuel up the line no problem.

Do I need to bite the cost and buy a Holley unit, and can it pull the fuel this far, or is there another economical alternative?

Thanks

It HAS to be as close to the tank as possible and BELOW the tank in order to get the "siphon" effect. It's best to have a sumped fuel tank if you're running an electric pump.

Does that go for the more expensive Holley units too? If you have one where did you mount out back, there isn't to many places to put this that aren't exposed or near the exhaust , and below the tank. I am using a stock fuel tank and sending unit so I can't put in an in tank unit.

I mounted mine behind the rear bumper. Yes, you can see it but that's ok. Did you upgrade your fuel lines to at least 3/8
My tank is sumped and I ran -8AN(1/2) fuel line from sump to carb.
Your main probalem is that it's located too far from the tank.
BTW, if I had to choose again, I would buy a Mallory 110 or 140 pump instead of the Holley. Holley's are very loud!

I appreciate all the help, it looks like I am going to get under the car this weekend and figure where I can put this. I called my parts guy and he recommends the Edelbrock unit, says the same thing as you, the Holleys are loud and older type design.

Thanks
