procharger/ vortec idea
alright so on my 88 i decided im going to go with a similar build that ryan has on his lx, i want to do a pro charger or maybe a vortec, im going to find a good intake (maybe tubular gt-40 or explorer, what ever i can get)
its still a speed density car so i was wonderin how that is going to work? will i need to converte it to mass air? as far as injectors go, ill probably need to swap them out and get a bigger pump as well, anything else i should worry about? ill use the stock heads for now untill i can get a good set of y heads or something. there is a kid at my local track who has a 88 notch that has nothing done but a pro charger with 10 psi (i think thats where i got this idea lol) i didnt ask him if it was still speed density but it was a 5 speed, which mine is a built AOD, but he did say it was completely stock minus the drag radials, he ran 13.09 first run and on his second run he went loose and was all over the place. what do you think? |

It can be done while still running SD. they will sell a fuel management unit that increases the amount of fuel pressure as boost increases. But it would definately be best to get a dyno tune to get the best FMU calibration.

You should go with bigger injectors im running 60lbs in my notch and 255 lp fuel pump mine is mass air flow im not saying you need go that much bigger but you need to go bigger the 19lb it comes with if you go with 60lb injectors you will have to get it tune for it to run even with smaller injectors its always a smart idea to get it tuned

so say i ran 9psi on my speed density car, id have to go bigger on the injectors for sure, so i would also need a pump 225lp
would it run properly long enough for me to get a chance to get it tuned?... understand its not going to runs its best until i get it tuned. |

no you don't have to, but you will be running a 12:1 FMU which will equal about 150 PSI fuel pressure. On the down side your injectors will not last long.

yeah i would but if you go to big it will not start with out a chip that was my problem i had to go get my sct chip put a basic tune on it you would be fine with some 32lb or 42lb i went extra big so when i put my new motor in i could up the boost but if iwere you i would find a wrecked stang and take the mass air flow and computer out so you can get a calibrated mass air flow it would make your life a whole lot easier and you could get a calibrated mass air flow and you wouldnt even need to get a chip

so what would you guys recommend, i really like the pro charger set up that ryans has and i have seen that same one on multiple fox bodies, but what about the vortech?
i think i would get 32lbs, im not sure but i think my friend can burn me the chip that i would need, he has a mark 8 that he tunes using his computer and a chip burner. so basically a 225lp pump, fuel pressure reg, 32lb injectors, 9psi, and then have it burned? does that sound like everything will work accordingly? |

You'll probably still need a 4:1 FMU with 30 lb injectors just to keep it safe. You may be able to tune with 30 lb injectors, but you'll run out of injector really fast.

You can find a vortech unit used for under $100.
