Valve Spring Troublee!

I'm doing a camshaft replacement and I am also switching out the springs and lifters. I am stuck on the springs at the moment since I cannot remove a certain piece. It is the ring around the valve locks. Here is a good picture.

Do you have a valve spring compressor?

you can not remove valve springs with a socket because you have to take out the ring that holds the spring in place

one of my valves slid into its little hole. its about an inch in but didnt fall in completely... how the hell do i get it out? i cant push it up through the spark plug hole. ive tried all i can think of, i even tried sucking on the hole to bring it back up but it wont budge.

will putting a q-tip in with some rtv on the end stick to it? i think it has a fine layer of oil on it.

help. i have no idea how to take heads off.

Someone may scold me for suggesting this.

If the valve stem is still in the hole partially and is still aligned, you could probably try turning the crank pulley with a breaker bar slowly until the piston pushes it up until you can grab it and lift it all the way up. Probably not the brightest thing in the world to try, but I'm a bit of a hack sometimes and thats what I would try. Stop if you feel a bind in any way, obviously.

Don't you have air applied to the cylinder as your removing the keeper and lock?

If you put compressed air into the sparkplug hole of the cylinder that your working on, it will push the valve up closed and you wont have to worry about it falling..
