The AEM computer is nice.
Has lots of good turbo control functions along with
built in 2 steps and "anti-lag" features and data logging

Cost $1,600, but plugs into factory wire harness.

You will not need an MSD ignition box. The AEM controls
timing even more accurate.

AEM is sensitive to timing errors with a distributor though so
I recommend you also get their EPM module with it ($300) to
replace distributor and run Corvette coilpacks.

A pms is a piggy back. fast, megasquirt and aem are standalone cpu;s

21st centruy ignition system.
more accurate timing,
more stable timing
1 coilpack for each cylinder is better than 1 coilpack for all 8 cylinders.

basically gives you a late gen new car ignition and timing
system vs. a mid '80s stock Ford one.

Nothing wrong with distributors they work fine, but there are better
and more modern ways to get timing and control spark now.

This is the best advice ive seen in a long time. Although, the corvette / LS style coil packs wont be needed for a modular motor.

You wont need to purchase the EPM mod. If you have the wiring harness for the mod motor, just purchase the AEM system thats for 96-98 mustangs, or 99-04. It may be worth while to get a 99-01 cobra harness, and run the factory COP. If your wondering what "COP" means, it stands for "Coil On Plug."

The twin coil DIS system on the 96-98 Cobras works pretty well, you could stick with that aswell, and run the AEM. I havent had much time with AEM. But, i can say it works. It works so well, i have a hard time chasing down cars using it!

We're a Megasquirt seller (and also carry large injectors). We've got a basic write-up on some of the easier ways to set up Megasquirt on a Mustang (including 4.6s) here:

How to MegaSquirt your Ford Mustang

It's also possible to set up a Megasquirt for direct coil control with no EDIS module.
