id drive it how it is for a while. Dont spend $1000 cause you have it. Save and you will have alot more to do it right i.e, top end kits

Check to see what gears are in it. If the gears are stock then a set of 3.73 gears will wake the car up. That $1000 should get you a set of GT40P (97.5-01 Explorer) heads, intake, throttle body, a good set of 1.7 roller rockers and gears. Should make 280+ horsepower at the tire and be one hell of a fun daily driver.

soooo common in the mustang world,..

exploder heads, mountaineer heads, exploder intakes, and throttle bodies, are a great way to add cheap horsies,... you can find those parts at your local pick and pull if your lucky

If you do it right, you can get up to 300rwhp out of gt-40 stuff. From what I've seen, stock SD cams from 87-88 5.0 HO's work well with the GT-40 stuff. They have slightly more aggresive ramp profiles, and can be had for next to nothing if you're lucky.

What year is the car?

Also, if you do the "p" heads, like darrell said, you either will have to get "p" specific headers (due to spark plug location), or most longtubes work, or deal with a few spark plugs being a pain to put in and out, and you will probably need 90 degree boots so that they don't touch the header and melt.
