keyless entry install

so im in the process of installing a keyless entry and im to the point where i have to wire in two relays to lock/ unlock the doors. does anyone know if its a positive pulse or ground pulse that works the lock actuators? i dont wanna fry the brain before i get a chance to use it at all.

thanks

What year?

nevermind.. it doesn't matter. All the foxes are 5 wire reversal. Meaning you have to break open the wire to hook it up. If you send it a positive trigger you will smoke the wires. The way they work is that there's no relays for the lock systems. The actuators are wired directly to the switches. I'll post up a diagram in a sec.

awesome thanks.
i got the rest of my wiring info from the12volt i wonder why i didnt see that.

so do i split the wire going to the actuator then run it through the relay? instead of just taping into the wire to the actuator?

Yea, and don't use tape, use a butt connector or solder. The circuit draws a good deal of current when its moving the actuators and if you just cut it and tape it together, you could eventually burn out the connection.

Also, you should be able to get these wires in the kick panel coming in through the door boot. They will be roughly 16-14 gauge wire... MAKE SURE YOU FUSE IT!! if you wire it backwards with no fuse, you will smoke the wires... and trust me, its not hard to wire it backwards and not even realize it. Ford liked to make the passenger switch the master switch so usually you want the outputs going towards the passenger door and not the driver.

20A is fine. I usually use a 15A but a 20A isn't going to hurt anything.

well i got it all in and i must have wired the relays wrong cause it pops the fuse as soon as i hit unlock. but it may be because i wired the power source for the parking light flash to the same 20A fuse the door locks are on.

but im going to fix that and check my wiring tomorrow.

thanks again fogged306

well i cant for the life of me get the locks to work. it just pops the fuse as soon as i hit unlock on the key fob. they work fine with the switch but i get nothing with the fob.

i checked my wiring and its right like the diagram so i dont know what to do.

Reverse the way you have the wires hooked up to the cut wires. I do this all the time.. this is exactly why the fuse is a must, haha. Keep the lock and unlock the same, just flip where they are cut.

The easy way to tell this, is to cut the wire (in your case, just undo your connections), put your test light on one end of the cut wire, and hit the lock or unlock (whichever wire you are working with) with the passenger switch. The side that goes positive is the side you want pin 87a on. I could be wrong about the passenger switch being the master on these cars but ford did that on a lot of their cars so the odds are about 80%.
