Engine IDentification

A few questions, how exactly can you tell a 302 and a 351w apart? I know the deck heights are a little bit different with the 351 being like 9.5 or so, but is there any other tale tale signs without removing the valve cover? Because a 351 will ahve it engraved in the valley.

Also will a 302 double sump oil pan fit the 351?

Thanks

Chuck

Depending on when the engine/vehicle was built, another way to tell the 351W apart from the 289/302 in most cases is the number of intake manifold to cylinder head bolts. The 289/302 has 12, the early 351W (pre 1976) has 16. Other differences between these similar looking engines are main bearing diameters 289/302s measure 2.25 inches, 351Ws are 3 inches slightly larger. Rod journals measure 2.12 inches compared to 2.31 inches, and the fact that the 351W uses a longer connecting rod 5.95 inches compared to 5.15 inches for the 289 and 5.09 inches for the 302. Hope that helps!

The intake on a 351W is noticeably wider than a 302. Block casting numbers will tell you too. 302 oil pans will not work on 351Ws.
