Fixing Quarter Windows

Does anyone have any recommendations on fixing up the moldings on the quarter windows? I am repainting my 87 LX Hatchback. The quarter windows are in great shape except for the moldings. The moldings were painting at some point and the paint is starting to crack. I saw some molding covers on Ebay, but it didn't like they match up with the other moldings to well. It looks like the best option so far, but am wondering what other people have been doing.

The car will be stored in the garage year round and will only be driven on nice days. It probably will sit in the sun on occasion while I am out. I would like to find a way to get them looking good, and have them stay looking good for at least 1-2 years. I don't mind redoing them occasionally.

Thanks

Thats actually the first place I looked. They have a section for quarter windows on their website, but it doesn't show any products. I ordered their catalog but haven't gotten it yet.

I didn't see any way of removing the moldings without destroying the windows though.

1/4 windows

I dont think the moldings can be "replaced" but you are right about those covers. They suck!! Afriend of mine bought them and they are junk. Stay away from them. Dugan Racing offers a service to restore them. Check it out. dugan-racing.com look under the featured products section..

I checked out dugan-racing.com thanks for the link, I didn't know about them. Their quarter window service is $300, it said they fill the moldings in with epoxy resin, they refinish them to match. I would much rather take that $300 and put it towards one of their suspension packages

I think I will get some epoxy resin, smooth out the moldings, then paint them. I don't know how long it will last, but it should clean them up quite a bit and only cost a few bucks.

Thanks

I don't know if I am taking this wrong, or I wasn't clear.

I do appreciate the advice and the link to Dugan Racing. I am hoping to keep the cost down on fixing the quarter windows as much as possible. I was glad to see that they fill the moldings with epoxy resin then paint them, I was wondering if that was a viable option. I am sure they would come out a little better if I would send them off, but I think I will try to do it myself, and take the money I save and put it towards one of their suspension packages. They looked like real nice setups for the money.

If you go to the auto parts store, there is a 2 part exopy kit to repair bumpers available. Take and mask off the window mouldings, spread a thin coat of the epoxy over the moulding, let it cure, sand it smooth and them repaint w/ the black bumper paint that you can also get at the parts store. they won't look 100% brand new but they will look much better

Sure no problem. I am trying to take pictures at all stages of the restoration of the car. As soon as I work on the windows I will post on this thread and PM you with a link to some pictures. I am doing alot more work then I originally planned. I am pretty anal about stuff though, so when I am done it should be one of the cleanest foxes on the road. I have the week between Christmas and New Years off, so I will be fixing the quarter windows then if I don't get to it sooner.

Thanks for the tip, it seem like epoxy resin was the way to go, but I have never used it before, so I didn't know how it was packaged. How easy is it to sand down? Since you said to spread it in thin coats, I am assuming it doesn't sand real easy.

the thinner you spread it, the farther it goes and the less mess it will create while sanding it.
