Running rich so rich it smokes like BBQ
Ok, so I just signed up for these forums. I have never seen them before. I am a member at the SN95 forums.
I just bought my first mustang and it is modded out pretty good. I bought it knowing it had issues and I have been slowly fixing them. I just figured out today that the car had been Supercharged before I got it but obviously was removed. I found that it had the intake fuel system from paxton including the FPR. I went and hooked up a gauge to the rail and saw that it was running 55lbs at idle so I lowered it to 42lbs. It idles WAY better but still is sometimes randomly idling high and sometimes surges, sometimes it floods itself too. I did not unplug the vacuum line from the FPR when I adjusted it. Do I need to do that and what happens if I did not? Even though I fixed the fuel pressure it is still running VERY rich. If I do WOT it will first off not go fast and it will begin smoking heavily, it is fuel not oil. Even though I got the pressure to go down via the FPR it still floods the same. What am I missing? It has 30lb injectors that were just installed and a 75mm MAF calibrated for the injectors and I just cleaned it to boot. The known problems with the car is I think the alternator may need to be replaced, I don't know the condition of the cat's or O2's. It has a MAF low voltage code and a TPS low voltage code as of a few weeks ago. The EGR was deleted but not programmed out so I have an EGR code. Thanks! |

What does the rest of your set-up consist of? H/C/I?, is it stock cubes? If so, 30's on a stock cube motor are probably a little large depending on whats done to it.

Here is a list of components, some are unknown.
Aode Stock 302 short block Trick flow aluminum heads Trick flow roller rockers Hardened push rods Trick flow track heat intake Trick flow valve covers F-cam Duration 288/288, Lift .512/.512 New motorsport 30lb injectors (Just installed) 75mm T.B. Mass air calibrated for the 30lb inj. BBK shorty headers New bbk 255lph fuel pump (Just installed) flow master exhaust paxton FPR The car sat for a while as well. I just finished replacing nearly every vacuum hose under the hood. I made sure all had a good seal too. I am positive it is not oil burning up. I can tell because the goof who had it before me deleted the EGR which included the air tube for the headers but did not weld it completely shut so exhaust comes out of the engine bay. So if I stomp on it I am met by the smell and smoke of unburnt fuel and I see it bad out of the mirror. When it nearly dies sometimes at idle I only safe it by revving up which gives me a puff too. |

Just sounds like a slight valve ping so it's not bad. I just noticed it was no completely sealed today when I had my hand over it while the engine was running. I bought some exhaust sealer and I am going to rig it up until I get new exhaust, which will include full length headers (with no EGR tube)

Ive had problems with MAF an ive been told that dirty sensor throws the low voltage code. Clean the sensor and see if it fixes that. Spray the sensor wires with carb cleaner, but dont touch them.
You are supposed to adjust the fuel pressure with the vacuum line off. This is because the fuel pressure varies with intake vacuum, and you set it to whats the max pressure, at WOT. That should be set at ~39lbs. Now youve got it at 42 in idle, and it goes higher than that when intake vacuum lowers, so that could be one thing to make it run rich. |

Oh, that makes sense now. I will do that today and see what happens.
