Choosing a cam

Well, pardon the noob ? but in search I was not finding quite what I was looking for, so thought I would ask it outright. I see a lot of "What do I need" but not good advice on how to choose a good cam - so here goes.

I just picked up an 89 GT Convertible, and it has a bad head gasket... since I need to tear the top end apart anyways to get to the head gaskets, doesn't make sense to put the stock heads back on it, so I ordered a set of GT40's with RR and an explorer intake. I was thinking, though, that since the motor has 129K on the clock, AND I pretty much have everything apart anyways, it might also make sense to dig a little deeper, replace the timing set, and make the cam too... So I started digging around, and found info on 3 different cams (well, many more, but these seemed to come up the most often) the B/E/F303's.

I am looking for a well-balanced cam - I like the lopey sound of the 5.0 with a deep cam (comparatively, some videos I found on YouTube seems to come best from the E303 cams) and I have heard the B303 works well with stock heads and an AOD.

Now, the question of the day: With the GT40 heads, Explorer intake, AOD and 3.08's in the back, what are your thoughts on picking a cam? The need for head work is OK depending on the $$ (since this is a budget (sorta) build). I would rather do it right the first time than wrong twice.

Based on what I have read, I am leaning towards having the GT40's (non-P) decked .025 and ported, and go with the E303. 3.73 posi rear is in the not-too-distant future, followed by a 5-speed conversion.

Any and all help is appreciated!

Bob

Yeah you say youve searched this site, yet you ask us what letter cam to use Thats funny.

Im no expert in these, but i like the Lunati Voodoo cams, on paper anyway, havent got any experience on them though. But they are supposed to be newest design, which is always good. I dont know how much lift can gt40s handle, the smallest 61010 cam already have .541/.549 lift.

call comp cams. They have EXTREMELY knowledgeable cust service and will talk to you about what it is that you are expecting from your cam and what you would like to avoid and help you make a selection based on that info

Awesome info - I will start with dropping the folks at competition cams a call. Unfortunately, I have spent the last 10 years building rock-crawlers, and haven't done too much in the way of engine guts...
