hey there stangers well i have a question for you.do you think that my 90 5.0 h.0 would benefit from a aod to 5 speed swap as far as the power gain rpm and all that?

better launch. i think they would be better for somebody who doesnt want to be at the track all the time. they do get annoying in traffic. easier to roast tires. I'm not for sure how much HP is gained but you do put more down. you will benifit greatly if you can shift.

A T-5 doesn't require as much hp to turn it compared to an automatic, so yes, it would free up some more hp....enough to feel the difference.

rough estimate: depending on the condition of your auto tranny...5-15%, maybe more even. those autos just get worse from the day they're put into commision. an added benefit is that you can shift at a higher rpm with the 5-speed. if you're decent at shifting, its much faster shifting than an auto. plus the manual weighs less. another rough guess: .5 seconds faster in the 1/4 mile or more

long story short, ditch the slushbox

Shifting a manual is no where near as fast as an automatic unless you have a Liberty or Lenco. Weight difference is dependent upon the transmissions your comparing. My C4 and bellhousing weighs much less than a T5 with bellhousing. On another note, we put a PA C4 in one of our cars a few years ago after we blew up another 5 speed and went 3 tenths faster. Why? Good converter, transbrake and consistent shifting. Manual transmissions are not always better that is why the majority of race cars run an automatic. Manuals are alot of fun on the street though.

racers use autos because of there consistency and because, with the right parts, they can shift faster. also they can shift at the right rpm, again, with the right parts. a stock AOD does not shift very fast. it definately isn't better for racing, for one because it doesn't shift at a high enough rpm and also because it weighs more.

BTW, not very fair to compare your drag race prepped c4 to a stock t5.

You're right, an AOD is a turd in stock form. Keeping it in Drive it will not shift high. AODs are possibly heavier than T5s.

A C4 on the other hand stock or modified will shift faster than anybody can shift a T5 and weigh alot less too.

I'd personally prefer a T5 in a car that sees mostly street time because it does take less power to operate, its funner to drive and fuel economy is much better. T5s are not always faster though, keep that in mind. I know common assumption is T5 cars are always faster and that has made me alot of money street racing and grudge racing in the past when I had my AOD equipped convertible.

Yeah, if I wanted to make it strictly a drag car. I'm about at the limit with a 3700 stall to be cruising the streets and highways with.
I really only use the car to drive 20min. to the track and back and ocassionally around town when I want to pick on the ricers

Oh, were you talking about 5.0 guy? Sorry, I thought you were asking if I could go higher stall speed.
Yeah, he could get a higher stall converter for his AOD but if he was going to go that route, he would need a shift kit and shifter also

Not really unless I went with a bigger cam, otherwise, the higher stall speed would bypass most of my cams power range.......like I think it's doing already!

Nope, all stock. It had exhaust and some other minor bolt ons but internally the engine and trans were all stock. Some local loud mouth was flapping his jaws one night about how his 5 speed LX would own me because it had a 5 speed and I had a "dogamatic". I drove my cruiser out, pumped 60 lbs of air in all 4 tires and raced him at the "spot". All I can tell you is I wasn't the one getting owned.

Blistering 2.0X 60 foot times. Impressive, huh? The car was a real rocket.
