What in the world is wrong here??
okay so i've had my stang for about 2 months, i know its a 5.0 and a bit of a gas guzzler...but i've spoken to a few other people who own or have owned mustangs and they say it should be no where near that bad, and i've tested my MPG and stuff right now i'm getting around 10-11 mpg. The car is stock with no mods, and i don't really drive it hard much at all. The check engine light does come on and off, i took it to a ford dealership and paid them 95 bucks to pull the codes, it came back clean. i'm not sure if maybe its a leaky injector, or if O2 sensors would cause the gas mileage, to be off by that much. I have noticed recently that sometimes when i start the car first thing in the morning it will sometimes almost die, or stall out completely. So i'm not sure if it could be a leaky injector causing this or anything. You can smell the car is running very rich. Haven't had time to put it on a wide band or anything to check the actual ratio. Any clue what could be causing this? I hope someone can give me some advice or things to check out, because i've looked over my bank statement today, and i've put literally over 1400 in gas in the car in 2 months.

Auto Zone, Advance Auto etc. will normally read your codes for free. Lean and rich bank codes are possible so if it is running that rich, those specific codes should have been set and stored. Oddly though, I have a 5.8 Bronco and the O2 sensor was not working because of the wires being broken but the only code it caused was an occasional lean bank #1 or something similar.
Some EEC4 computers have a "cylinder balance test" that might help pinpoint a bad injector but I'm not sure if the version of EEC4 in the 91 Mustang has that option. At least mine didn't or my Actron scanner thinks it doesn't. EEC-IV Testing - Cylinder Balance Test

yea i'm gonna check it out...just curious though if anyone else would know of any reasons other than O2 sensors or leaky injectors or something that would cause it to get that bad of gas mileage as well as run so rich

cool, willie what kind of gas mileage did your 5.0 get?? since you're from the same area as me i can give you an example, i drove from roanoke to franklin county and back to roanoke, i filled up before i left roanoke, when i got back home i was on less than an 8th of a tank. Doesn't seem to be right to me what do you think?

I don't know why I assumed you had a 91, my bad. I guess they don't have the older code readers. Sounds like you got a local hook-up either way.

I had that problem. Before I figured it out, my cats turned into a glob and I had enough fuel in my oil that it looked and flowed like black coffee and it took a few oil changes to get it all out of there. At least my engine is clean now

EGR issues can also cause poor mileage. And defintiely the o2 sensor.. especially if the check engine light comes and goes, a lot of times, that indicates an o2 on its way out.
