Need Fuel Tank Help

Hey guys, I'm home from school for a short visit and I thought I'd slap in my new fuel tank for the 1990 GT.

Got it in place in record time, so far so good. But when I went to tighten the straps in place, I noticed a problem. Driver's side was semi-ok, but passenger side was way off lining up the strap bolt to the hole. Took me a while to figure it out, but I bought a Spectra tank from Advance Auto Parts and there is a flange about 3/4 or better running around the middle where the two stamped halves were welded. My stock tank doesn't have this. It's such an obstruction that I can't position the tank correctly in the straps. I don't want to bend the flange because the weld runs down the middle of it (the weld is not on the vertical face of the tank). So now I need to find a new tank, but all of the local places (Advance, Autozone, Napa) carry the same brand.

Any help? Has anyone ever changed their tank successfully? If so, what did you wind up getting?

Thanks in advance.

Had the same issue with a spectra tank on my 83, I ended up getting a longer bolt for the passenger side to help pull it up into place. The seem I think was already bent on my where the strap crossed over so I don't recall this giving me a problem. Drivers side was no problem with stock bolt.

I also found the seam tab needed to be bent down a bit to clear the exhaust tail pipes.

Sorry I don't have much more information than this to help you

Thank you for sharing anyway. I'm happy (to some extent) that someone else had this problem other than me. I may just go to some of the Mustang only shops around school and ask for a good condition used tank (Which will be 50% max what I paid for this tank plus I don't have to wince at hammering my gas tank).
